Andes from Santiago: Skiing, Hiking & Mountain Escapes
Santiago sits at 520m elevation with the Andes rising directly behind the city — on clear days, the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera loom over the eastern suburbs. This makes Santiago one of the world's best-located cities for mountain adventure, with ski resorts and hiking trails within 90 minutes.
Skiing (June–October)
Three world-class ski resorts are accessible from Santiago: Valle Nevado (the largest, 3,000m base elevation, 1,000 hectares of skiable terrain), La Parva (more challenging terrain, steeper runs) and El Colorado (closest to the city, most accessible). All three connect via road from Las Condes — combined lift access across resorts available. Day tickets: $50-80 USD.
Summer Hiking (November–April)
Cajón del Maipo — the most accessible Andean valley from Santiago (1.5 hours southeast). Hiking, white-water rafting on the Maipo River, rock climbing and hot springs at Termas Baños Morales. The Embalse El Yeso (a stunning turquoise reservoir) requires 4WD or an organised tour.
Cerro San Cristóbal (30 minutes from Centro)
Santiago's urban mountain — take the teleferico funicular to the summit for panoramic Andes views. Best clear days: morning after rain, June-August.
