Santiago Neighbourhoods: Barrio Italia, Lastarria & Bellavista
Santiago's character is defined by its barrios — each neighbourhood a distinct village-within-the-city with its own pace, architecture and scene. Knowing which barrio to explore dramatically changes the Santiago experience.
Barrio Italia
Santiago's most creative neighbourhood — a grid of early 20th century houses converted into antique shops, vintage clothing stores, independent design studios, specialty coffee bars and some of the city's best restaurants. The intersection of Avenida Italia and Condell is the heart. Browse on weekend mornings when the flea market stalls appear.
Barrio Lastarria
Santiago's most European-feeling neighbourhood — cobblestone streets, outdoor restaurant terraces, galleries and the wonderful Museo de Artes Visuales (MAVI). The weekend antiques and arts fair in Plaza Mulato Gil de Castro is a Santiago ritual. Adjacent to Parque Forestal and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes.
Bellavista
The bohemian nightlife district below Cerro San Cristóbal — Pablo Neruda's house La Chascona is here (open for tours), surrounded by street art murals, restaurant rows and bars that don't get started until midnight. The area around Patio Bellavista is the most visited but explore the side streets for local gems.
