Santiago Museums Guide: Museum of Memory, MAVI & Best Cultural Sites

Santiago has invested heavily in its museum infrastructure since the return to democracy in 1990, and the result is a museum landscape that is broader and more sophisticated than most visitors expect. From the quietly devastating Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos (Museum of Memory and Human Rights) to the world-class pre-Columbian collection at the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino, Santiago's best museums are genuinely excellent — and almost entirely free or very low cost to enter.

The essential museum experience in Santiago is the Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos in the Barrio Brasil neighbourhood — a powerful and beautifully designed institution documenting the human rights crimes of the Pinochet military dictatorship (1973–1990) with testimony, artefacts, archive footage, and evidence of systematic torture and disappearance. The museum is sober, respectful, and profoundly moving; it is also relevant to understanding contemporary Chile in ways that nothing else in the city prepares visitors for. Admission is free.

The Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino in the historic colonial downtown houses one of Latin America's finest collections of indigenous art and artefact from across the Americas — Andean textiles, Olmec figurines, Amazonian ceramics, and Mapuche silver jewellery displayed in a beautifully restored colonial building. The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in the Parque Forestal, housed in a beaux-arts palace, holds the national fine art collection with particularly strong 19th and 20th-century Chilean painting. Both are free on Sundays. For contemporary art, the GAM (Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral) hosts exhibitions, theatre, and music in a brutalist building that has become one of Santiago's great civic spaces.
