Water Sports & Coastal Day Trips from Santiago: Pacific Adventures

Santiago is only 100 kilometres from the Pacific coast, making it uniquely positioned for water sports day trips that most inland capitals can't match. Valparaíso and Viña del Mar are just 1.5 hours by bus or car, offering surfing, kayaking, and sailing on the Chilean Pacific. The beaches at Cachagua and Zapallar to the north are calmer for sea kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding in protected coves. Pichilemu, 3 hours south, is Chile's surf capital — Punta de Lobos is a world-class point break hosting international competitions. Closer to Santiago, the Cajón del Maipo offers whitewater kayaking and rafting on the Maipo River (grade 3–4 rapids) from October through March. For certified instruction, several Santiago-based operators offer weekend kayaking and surf lessons combining coastal exploration with Andean scenery — a Pacific-to-Andes contrast no other city offers.
