Maipo Valley Wine Day Trip from Santiago
The Maipo Valley is Chile's oldest and most celebrated wine region, lying just 40 kilometres south of Santiago and producing the country's finest Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards that stretch toward the foothills of the Andes. A day trip to Maipo from Santiago offers world-class wine tasting, gourmet lunches at vineyard restaurants, and stunning scenery — all without the need to travel far from the capital. The valley's most prestigious wineries, including Concha y Toro, Santa Rita, and Cousiño-Macul, all offer guided tours and tastings.
Most visitors opt for half-day tours departing Santiago in the morning and returning by late afternoon, typically visiting two or three wineries with tastings at each. The tours include guided walks through the vineyards and barrel rooms, where knowledgeable guides explain Chilean wine-making history and the particular conditions of the Maipo terroir — the combination of Andean snowmelt irrigation, intense sunshine, and cool nights that gives Maipo Cabernet its distinctive character. Many wineries now offer premium experiences including horseback riding through the vines and private tastings of reserve wines.
The town of Pirque, in the upper Maipo Valley, is worth visiting for its craft market and the El Principal reserve, a protected area of native Chilean scrubland where condors occasionally soar overhead. Independent travellers can reach the valley by metro to Puente Alto followed by a short taxi ride, or rent a car for greater flexibility between estates. September through November is ideal for visiting during the spring growing season, while March and April bring harvest energy as grapes are picked under the summer sun.
